On April 2, 2025, at 02:34 UTC time there was an infrastructure deployment which introduced a new type of record that could not be interpreted by our internal service discovery system. This resulted in unavailability of our internal service discovery system causing widespread service disruptions across Shopify's platform from 02:37 UTC to approximately 03:21 UTC.

During the impact period, storefronts, admins, checkouts, and POS were intermittently unavailable. Additional Shopify systems, such as the status page, were also impacted. The ability to reach Shopify’s support or to view our help center were also disrupted.

Teams mitigated the incident by rolling back the infrastructure deployment and cleaning up the newly added record data.

To prevent recurrence and mitigate impact in future instances, we have developed a solution to ensure our internal service discovery system remains stable under similar conditions if it encounters unexpected record formats.

We will be conducting additional internal root cause analysis to understand how this issue occurred and to explore long-term, resilient solutions. We will be adding further information about additional action items.
